Get Curious, Create Balance

Ginny VanOeveren   DIFY (Do It For Yourself),  back to you with a few words about curiosity.

Have you ever noticed that your child asks a lot of why questions?  They drive you nuts, don’t they?  How about the how come? tag line?  That one used to make me crazy...when I didn’t have a clue what the answer was or even really understand the question.

Kids have always learned by being curious about their world and everything in it.  When they are younger their questions are pretty basic, Why do I have to brush my teeth, why do I have to eat broccoli, why do I have to go to bed NOW???Those are the answers that are pretty easy to come up with but they don’t really give a rip why they have to brush their teeth, they just don’t want to stop what they are doing.

They don’t really care how good broccoli is for them.  They are getting your undivided attention while you are stumbling around for answers that they don’t really care about.  Oh sure, the info that you give them on those mundane subjects sinks in and they use it somewhere else down the line , but at that moment, they don’t really care.

As they get older, they begin to ask more important questions ...like why are you and dad always mad at each other? or maybe why do we have money to do what you want to but not what I want to do?Those are the kind of curious questions that make a parent defensive and take a little longer to answer.  They are also perfect times for you to get curious right back at your kids.

Remember to keep your emotions out of your listening so you can think clearly about the response that is forming in your head. As a parent working toward a balanced life, control of emotions when getting curious will go a long way toward that balanced life.  Creating productive communication with curiosity is a two way street and everyone involved deserves to feel safe to talk honestly and freely, especially your kids.
